    The Forward Deployed Engineer

    Jay Burgess

A simple guide to building what enterprises actually need. How to find the real requirement and ship the system that delivers it, alongside the customer.

    About this book

The job is real, it pays well, and there is no degree for it.

Forward Deployed Engineering is what happens when a company sends someone into a client's world to make software actually work there, not just in the demo. Aspiring FDEs keep hitting the same wall: no job description, no clear path in, and no honest field guide to what the work really looks like once you have it.

This book is that guide. Written by a working Forward Deployed Engineer, it strips the role down to what matters and skips the theory.

Written for aspiring Forward Deployed Engineers who want a direct, practical way in, with simple sketches throughout to make the ideas stick.

    What's inside

    • What actually separates an FDE from a sales engineer, support engineer, or implementation consultant
    • How to start doing the work before you have the title, and build a portfolio that proves it
    • What forward deployed interviews really test for, and how to prepare
    • The tactical playbook: the first 48 hours on site, finding the real problem, scoping honestly, shipping under enterprise constraints, and handing off work that survives after you leave
    • How to turn one engagement into the next, when to say no, and how to build your own practice around this skill
