The Agentic Builder: Field Notes on Product Development for Systems Thinkers

    Jay Burgess

A builder's guide to shipping real products with agentic tools -- from first idea to something customers actually use.

    About this book

Most product teams build too much.

They build too many features. They build them too quickly. They release them before they are ready. Their products grow in surface area without growing in value.

The Agentic Builder is a field guide for product development in the era of autonomous systems.

Drawing on twenty years of building software in regulated, high-complexity environments, Jay Burgess introduces the ACRE framework for product health — Adoption, Conversion, Retention, Expansion — and the patterns that separate teams that ship from teams that perform.

For builders, product leaders, founders, and the engineers who are tired of shipping features that don't move metrics. Twelve chapters. No frameworks dressed in jargon. No formulaic recaps. Just the patterns that actually matter, named clearly, with the trade-offs honest.

The third book in a trilogy that includes Agentic Engineering: Building Autonomous AI Systems That Actually Work and Stories from a Systems Thinker: Twenty-Five Parables on Why the Obvious Fix Never Works.

    • Roadmaps as hypotheses, and the discipline of not building
    • Why pricing is a product decision, not a finance decision
